American Express has agreed to a deal for 2 World Trade, clearing the way for its development. More than a decade ago, Silverstein Properties, the developer controlling much of the World Trade Center property, signed a lease with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey just six weeks before the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people. However, while several other towers rose from Ground Zero, 2 World Trade struggled to find the necessary tenant to make its development financially viable. American Express, instead of being a tenant, will now take over the remaining time on Silverstein's 99-year lease and finance the development of the property itself. The financial services giant has hired the prominent firm to develop the nearly 2 million square-foot high-rise, which will house 10,000 workers. The tower, designed by Foster + Partners, is poised to break ground this spring and open in 2031. This deal highlights the potential of New York as a business hub, with American Express committing to a long-term lease and investing in the city's development.
