Unseasonable Weather Disrupts Australia Day Festivities in Perth
Perth residents and visitors alike faced a damp and chilly Australia Day, with rain and cool temperatures derailing beach and barbecue plans. The day's maximum temperature of just 23°C was a stark contrast to the typical summer heat, and the rain arrived around 10:30 am, lasting until 1 pm.
The Bureau of Meteorology predicted a day of light showers, with a maximum of 1mm of rainfall throughout, a rare occurrence for the usually sunny Australia Day. The weather was attributed to a weak cold front affecting the southern regions of Western Australia.
Despite the unusual weather, the Bureau's spokesperson noted that such patterns are not unheard of in January. In fact, the last six years have seen at least one day with temperatures around 25°C, and light showers are a common occurrence each year. The coldest January day on record was in 2020, with a temperature of 22.1°C on the 3rd, also accompanied by light showers.
The spokesperson added that while this Australia Day was cooler than average, it was not the first time Perth had experienced a cold day in January. The last time the city saw rain on January 26th was in 2016, and a small amount of rain was recorded on Australia Day last year.
Looking ahead, the weather forecast for the upcoming week shows a return to sunny days with temperatures rising, offering a welcome relief from the recent cool and rainy conditions.
