However, the tag value is far less than the current market rate of $40 million per year, which could be a point of contention. If the tag is applied, Pickens and the Cowboys will have until July 15 to negotiate a multi-year deal. If they fail to reach an agreement, Pickens could potentially hold out, refusing to sign a long-term contract and missing out on the offseason program, training camp, and even the preseason.
And this is the part most people miss: even after July 15, Pickens could still argue for a higher salary, as the tag amount might not satisfy his expectations for 2026. On the flip side, with the potential for a second straight contract year, Pickens might opt to take the money and work hard to secure a long-term deal in 2027.
But here's the twist: the Cowboys could tag him again in 2027, resulting in a 20% increase in compensation, which would be a whopping $33.6 million.
Last year, a similar situation with Micah Parsons, also represented by agent David Mulugheta, ended in a late-August trade. While a repeat of that outcome is unlikely this time, the potential for an ugly standoff remains, especially if Cowboys owner Jerry Jones decides to bypass Mulugheta and negotiate directly with Pickens.
