European Alps Avalanche Tragedy: Train Derailment and Fatalities (2026)

Avalanche Season in the Alps: A Deadly Warning

The European Alps have been hit by a series of deadly avalanches, claiming lives and causing chaos across the region. The latest tragedy struck on Monday when a train derailing in Switzerland was caused by a snow slide, injuring five people near the town of Goppenstein. This incident follows a week of extreme avalanche warnings, with alerts reaching category 5, the highest level, across large areas of the western Alps.

The avalanche risk has been exacerbated by recent heavy snowfall and windswept snowcaps on weak internal layers, creating a highly unstable snowpack. This has led to a series of deadly incidents involving skiers, with two Britons and a French national killed in separate avalanches in the French Alps on Friday. Another avalanche on the Italian side of Mont Blanc on Sunday claimed the lives of two skiers.

The Italian mountains have seen a record number of deaths, with 13 off-piste skiers, climbers, and hikers losing their lives during the week ending February 8th, including 10 in avalanches triggered by the unstable snowpack. The situation is so dire that even trained professionals are not immune to danger. Adventure skier Daniel Matthews, who was buried for eight minutes after a couloir collapsed, shared his harrowing experience on Instagram, emphasizing the importance of following signs and heeding warnings.

The European avalanche warning system categorizes grade 5 risk conditions as 'extraordinary' and rare, indicating a high potential for numerous very large and extremely large natural avalanches. In such conditions, skiers and mountaineers are advised to avoid all but open and unthreatened slopes. The current risk levels in the mountains are a result of heavy snowfall and high winds, which have deposited heavy and unconsolidated accumulations on an already unstable snowpack.

As the avalanche season continues, the Alps remain a dangerous place, with the potential for further tragic incidents. The authorities and experts are urging caution and adherence to safety guidelines to minimize the risk of avalanches and ensure the well-being of all visitors to the region.
