Exeter Roadworks Alert: Heavitree Road Closure in February - What You Need to Know (2026)

Exeter's Main Route Faces Another Round of Roadworks

Exeter residents and commuters are in for another round of disruptions as the main road in and out of the city will be closed for major works in February, just months after a previous closure. Devon County Council is undertaking extensive improvements to Heavitree Road, including the installation of new traffic lights and a 'traffic island'.

The road was previously closed from September to November for extended work on gas pipes by Wales and West Utilities. Now, the council aims to enhance bus services by giving them priority at crossroads with Polsloe Road and Barrack Road. This initiative, funded by the Department for Transport, is designed to reduce bus journey times and improve reliability.

Jacqi Hodgson, Green Party leader and cabinet member for climate change, acknowledges the disruption but emphasizes the long-term benefits. She believes the works will significantly enhance bus journeys in the future.

The road will be closed overnight from February 2nd and during the day from February 16th, with the entire project expected to last four weeks. A diversion route will be in place via Magdalen Road, Barrack Road, Topsham Road, Holloway Street, Magdalen Street, Western Way, and Heavitree Road. Additionally, resurfacing work will be conducted during the road closures.

Despite the short-term inconvenience, the council assures that these improvements will ultimately benefit the community by enhancing bus services and reducing travel times.
