For Hull FC's Jake Arthur, it’s as if the joy of Christmas has returned, signaling an exciting new chapter in his career as he prepares for his debut with the team.
As January comes to a close, the 23-year-old half-back can hardly contain his enthusiasm, reminiscent of a child eagerly awaiting Christmas morning. This Sunday marks a significant milestone for him as he steps onto the field for the first time as a Hull FC player in a friendly match against Wigan Warriors. Just five days later, he’ll make his official Challenge Cup debut against Salford, heightening the anticipation even further.
Arthur, who exudes a vibrant and cheerful personality, has been hard at work since joining the club, training alongside his new teammates from day one. He has quickly established strong partnerships, particularly with fellow half-back Aidan Sezer, as well as other key players like Will Pryce, Cade Cust, and Amir Bourouh. This synergy has only fueled his excitement for the upcoming season.
"Yeah, absolutely! It feels like I've been in this excited state for weeks now," Arthur shared with Hull Live. "It's not just about the thrill of the first round; I'm genuinely looking forward to this week and getting back out there on the field. Playing is what we all love, and I can't wait!"
Hull FC is banking on Arthur, a young talent formerly with the Parramatta Eels, to guide the team throughout the season, especially alongside Sezer. Although he may not carry the same high-profile reputation as some international players, Arthur is brimming with confidence in his new team's potential. While many analysts might focus on other teams as frontrunners for trophies this year, Arthur remains steadfast in his belief that Hull FC has what it takes to succeed.
"I'm a competitor, and my goal here is to win," he asserted. "If you're not playing to win, what’s the point? We aim to clinch the Challenge Cup, secure the league leaders' title, and ultimately triumph in the competition. That's our target.
"I have no doubt that we have the capability to achieve that. If we can keep everyone healthy and on the field, I believe we can do it."
Arthur is among several fresh faces at Hull FC, who faced challenges last season due to injuries affecting key players like John Asiata and Will Pryce. Fortunately, both are fit to start this season alongside new recruits Harvie Hill and James Bell from Wigan and St Helens, respectively, along with potential game-changer Sam Lisone, previously with the Rhinos.
"We have a fantastic squad here, with a great mix of players," Arthur remarked, highlighting his developing partnership with club captain Sezer. "Our connection has been strengthening nicely, and as we continue to play together, I believe that chemistry will only improve.
"I've settled in really well, and the camaraderie among the lads has made my transition smoother than I expected."
While he admits that adjusting to the local weather has taken some time, Arthur feels he’s getting accustomed to it. "Most of the time, it doesn’t bother me, but when it gets windy, that's when I find it challenging—those days are when I start shivering!"
