IMF Chief Clarifies AI Rank Row with India's IT Minister: 'It Was The Moderator' (2026)

"It Was The Moderator": IMF Chief Clarifies Controversy Surrounding AI Ranking with Ashwini Vaishnaw

In a recent development, Kristalina Georgieva, the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), took the opportunity to express the organization's respect for India's advancements in artificial intelligence. This clarification came on Tuesday after a public discussion with Ashwini Vaishnaw, India’s Minister of Information Technology, regarding India's position in the global AI landscape.

During an interview with NDTV's Vishnu Som at the World Economic Forum held in Davos, Georgieva stated, "Let me clarify the situation; we truly admire India for its progress concerning reforms, digital public infrastructure, and its highly skilled IT workforce." Her comments were intended to set the record straight following a statement made by Vaishnaw, who had recently contested Georgieva's claim that India fell into a "second grouping" of nations in terms of AI capabilities.

Vaishnaw highlighted Stanford University’s rankings, which place India in third place globally for AI preparedness, emphasizing that he believes India deserves a spot in the top tier. He remarked, "I’m not sure what criteria the IMF uses, but according to Stanford, India ranks third in the world for AI readiness. I believe your classification is inaccurate."

Georgieva responded to this exchange by referring to it as a "minor hiccup," attributing the misunderstanding to the moderator’s misrepresentation of the IMF's views. She asserted, "The moderator was speculating. In our view, India is a significant player in the development of AI technologies."

She further discussed the immense potential of AI on a global scale, particularly its capacity to enhance productivity and economic growth. Georgieva noted, "We estimate that AI could contribute to an increase in global growth by up to 0.8%."

Praising India’s dynamic economy, she added, "With the advancement of AI, India's prospects will continue to improve. I'm genuinely impressed by how India is tackling AI in order to remain competitive among nations that are pursuing different strategies."

Wrapping up her positive remarks, she stated, "We have consistently highlighted India as a shining example in a challenging global economic climate. I am looking forward to visiting India, especially as I prepare to attend the upcoming India-AI summit next month."

This dialogue raises intriguing questions about how countries perceive their standing in emerging technologies and their respective roles in the global market. How do you think India's AI positioning will influence its future economic strategies? Are there other nations that may challenge this ranking? Let's hear your thoughts in the comments!
