Katikkiro Urges Youth to Uphold Dignity and Avoid Political Misconduct During Elections
The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has issued a powerful call to the kingdom's youth, urging them to maintain dignity and refrain from any disruptive or unlawful behavior during the ongoing electoral period. In a message delivered by the Second Deputy Katikkiro, Robert Waggwa Nsibirwa, the need to avoid insults, vehicle blockades, and other forms of misconduct that could endanger individuals or tarnish Buganda's image was emphasized.
This plea was made during the Buganda Youth Day celebrations at Lubiri, Mengo, where a diverse crowd of hundreds gathered to reflect on the youth's pivotal role in the kingdom's development. The event, themed 'The Youth's Effort Towards Self-Development', showcased initiatives promoting community development and financial independence among young people.
The celebrations took place amidst rising political tensions, with recent incidents involving youth supporters blocking roads and engaging in verbal altercations during political demonstrations. Addressing the gathering, the Katikkiro stressed the importance of dignity and unity, stating, 'Elections come and go, but our unity and respect for the Kabaka must remain intact. I urge all youth to vote for leaders who honor Buganda and our king.'
Youth leaders also raised concerns about political harassment. Derrick Kavuma, Chairperson of the Buganda Youth Council, condemned the detention of young political actors, calling for justice and the immediate production of all detained youth in court.
The chief guest, Prince David Kintu Wasajja—Patron of Youth in Buganda—encouraged young people to pursue leadership roles and advocate for the kingdom's interests at the national level. He said, 'Youth Day is not just a celebration—it is a reminder that the future of Buganda lies in your hands. Stay united, stay educated, and remain loyal to the Kabaka.' Prince Wasajja also emphasized cultural pride, learning, and innovation as essential tools for sustainable development.
Katikkiro Mayiga echoed these sentiments, praising the creativity and drive of the kingdom's youth. The Buganda Youth Day celebrations continue to highlight Buganda's commitment to unity, cultural preservation, and youth empowerment, especially during politically sensitive periods, serving as a reminder of the importance of maintaining dignity and avoiding political misconduct.
