The core issue: Pakistan's focus is laser-focused on eliminating terrorism, sidelining any other conditions set by Afghanistan. This stance, articulated by Director-General of Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, underscores the critical nature of the situation.
On October 19, following high-level discussions in Doha, Pakistan and Afghanistan agreed to an immediate ceasefire. Both nations pledged to respect each other’s sovereignty, with a follow-up meeting scheduled for October 25 in Istanbul. The goal of the Istanbul talks was to establish a concrete mechanism to monitor the Afghan Taliban's actions and prevent cross-border terrorist attacks.
During a closed-door briefing with senior journalists, Lt Gen Chaudhry made it clear: "The conditions set by Afghanistan hold no significance. The important thing is the eradication of terrorism." He emphasized that Pakistan's security is guaranteed by its armed forces, not Afghanistan, and that Islamabad has never celebrated the Taliban's arrival.
Pakistan is actively conducting operations against banned groups, including the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), resulting in the killing of 1,667 terrorists.
"In Istanbul, the Afghan Taliban were clearly told that they need to control terrorism," Lt Gen Chaudhry stated. "How they do it is their job. We conducted a counter-terrorism operation, and the terrorists fled to Afghanistan. Hand them over, we’ll deal with them according to the Constitution and the law. There will be no talks with terrorists, and Pakistan gave the Afghan Taliban a befitting response, which yielded the results we wanted."
The DG ISPR also shed light on the nexus between criminals and terrorist organizations, particularly their financial gains through opium cultivation, estimating between Rs1.8 and 2.5 million per acre.
"The entire population joins them, even warlords join in, and they all work together," Lt Gen Chaudhry said, highlighting the complexity of the issue. He further added that drug smuggling from Afghanistan into Pakistan and beyond is a major concern, with Afghan drug smugglers interfering in Afghan politics.
Senior journalist Hamid Mir, who attended the briefing, reported that journalists were shown evidence of Afghan Taliban soldiers involved in terrorism within Pakistan. This evidence was the same as shared with the Afghan Taliban in Doha, including identification cards.
Border Tensions and Dialogue:
Recent weeks have seen a deterioration in relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan, marked by border skirmishes, conflicting statements, and accusations. The hostilities began on the night of October 11, with an attack launched from Afghanistan. This followed an allegation from the Afghan Taliban regarding airstrikes by Pakistan into Afghanistan, an accusation that Islamabad has neither confirmed nor denied.
Pakistan has consistently demanded that the Taliban prevent terror groups from using Afghan soil against Pakistan. However, the Taliban deny these allegations.
Pakistan continues to face the challenge of terrorism, suffering multiple casualties among security forces in intelligence-based operations. After the initial skirmish, more incidents occurred along the border. Pakistan also targeted Gul Bahadur group camps in Afghanistan.
Dialogue in Doha led to a temporary ceasefire and a commitment to further discussions in Istanbul to establish lasting peace and stability.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Türkiye and Qatar, with their strong ties to Pakistan, played crucial roles in these negotiations, especially Qatar, which also mediated between the Afghan Taliban and NATO forces.
And this is the part most people miss...
The emphasis on eliminating terrorism above all else could be seen as a strong stance. However, it also raises questions about the long-term implications for regional stability and the potential for a more comprehensive approach that addresses the root causes of conflict.
What do you think? Does Pakistan's prioritization of eliminating terrorism seem like the right approach, or should other factors be considered? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
