Santa Rosa County is buzzing with discussions as the district unveils its proposed zoning plans for the upcoming Soundside High School. Scheduled to open its doors this fall, the new school is strategically located between Gulf Breeze High School and Navarre High School, two institutions currently serving just over 4,000 students combined. But here's where it gets controversial: the district's plans involve redistributing these students across the three schools, a move that has sparked both interest and apprehension among parents, students, and community members alike.
After months of meticulous planning, the district has presented three rezoning options for the southern part of the county. These proposals, creatively labeled as the purple zone, pink zone, and orange zone, aim to address the growing student population and create room for future expansion. Joey Harrell, assistant superintendent of administrative services, shed some light on the differences during a recent school board meeting. The proposed zones stretch from Highway 98 and the Garcon Point Bridge in the west to Stallwood Drive in the east. Harrell emphasized the need to balance current enrollment with future growth, stating, 'We're building this new facility to lower class sizes and give students more room to thrive.'
And this is the part most people miss: the pink zone proposal accommodates over 1,500 students at Soundside, while the orange zone makes room for approximately 1,200. This means that the higher the enrollment at Soundside, the fewer students Gulf Breeze and Navarre will have. Is this a fair trade-off, or are we sacrificing the stability of existing schools for the sake of expansion?
The district is also considering a phased approach, starting with just 9th and 10th graders and gradually integrating older students. This strategy has left some wondering about the potential impact on school culture and extracurricular activities. Bryce Griffin, a sophomore at Gulf Breeze High School, shared his thoughts: 'It’d be pretty cool to have another high school for competition, and it’d definitely help with overcrowding.'
However, not everyone is on board without reservations. Jessie Drossis, a grandparent with family at both Gulf Breeze and Navarre, expressed her concerns: 'Rezoning is much needed, but I worry about the increased traffic on Highway 98 and the staffing challenges at the new school.' She remains hopeful, though, that Soundside will alleviate overpopulation and reduce traffic congestion in the area. But will it be enough to keep up with the county's rapid growth?
Adding another layer of complexity, the new zones only cover the southern end of the county, leaving students outside these areas to navigate the school choice or transfer request process. While all requests are reviewed, there are no guarantees, leaving some families in limbo. Is this a fair system, or does it disproportionately affect certain communities?
