Sen. Rand Paul: Bombing Iran Could Backfire, Rally Iranians Behind Regime (2026)

In a recent interview, Senator Rand Paul issued a stark warning about the potential consequences of the United States' military intervention in Iran, following President Donald Trump's threat to bomb the country in response to protests against its regime. Paul, a Republican senator, emphasized the unintended outcomes of such an action, stating, 'The only problem I have with saying, 'Oh, we're going to bomb Iran,' is that sometimes it has the opposite effect.'

Paul's concern is that bombing Iran could unite the Iranian people behind their government, turning them into a formidable force against any foreign intervention. He expressed his wish for the freedom movement to succeed, but also argued that it's not the American government's responsibility to intervene in every freedom movement around the world. Instead, he believes the focus should be on encouraging the protesters and supporting a freedom-loving government that allows free elections.

The senator also highlighted the constitutional issue of the president's authority to bomb countries without congressional approval. He stated, 'there is the sticking point of the Constitution that we don't let presidents bomb countries just when they feel like it. They're supposed to ask the people through the Congress for permission.'

Paul's comments come at a time when the debate over the War Powers Act is more relevant than ever. He believes that the Act is crucial in determining whether the people have a say in whether the country goes to war, not just in Venezuela, but also in other regions like Greenland, Colombia, Cuba, and Iran. His statement, 'I think you'd be hard-pressed to find someone in Greenland for it, but you'd also be hard-pressed to find somebody in Washington who's for a military invasion on either side of the aisle,' underscores the importance of public opinion in such decisions.
