A bold step towards a nuclear future: South Korea's Saeul 3 is ready to shine!

In a move that has sparked both excitement and controversy, South Korea's Nuclear Safety and Security Commission has granted an operational license to the Saeul Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 3. This unit, formerly known as Shin Kori 5, is a powerhouse with an impressive 1,400 MW output and a design life of 60 years.

But here's where it gets interesting: this unit has faced its fair share of challenges due to South Korea's previous nuclear phase-out policy. However, with enhanced safety features, it's ready to take center stage.

Imagine a reactor building with walls 15 centimeters thicker, designed to withstand external events like an aircraft crash! And that's not all; the auxiliary buildings have also been fortified with 30-centimeter-thick walls. Additionally, the unit boasts measures to protect against earthquakes and has backup generators for any power loss scenarios. It even has storage capacity for used nuclear fuel, ensuring a sustainable 60-year operational life.

Acting KHNP President and CEO Jeon Dae-wook emphasized the commitment to safety and quality assurance, promising thorough test runs and inspections. Nuclear Safety and Security Commission Chairman Choi Won-ho echoed this sentiment, stating that safety has been rigorously verified based on legal procedures and scientific evidence.

The construction of Saeul 3 has been a collaborative effort, involving approximately 760 companies and creating a ripple effect of job opportunities and economic growth in related industries. Once operational, it will supply a significant portion of Korea's power generation, approximately 1.7%, and meet a substantial 37% of Ulsan's electricity demand.

In a twist of fate, the Shin Kori plant in Busan was rebranded as the Saeul plant in 2022, with units 3 to 6 becoming units 1 to 4 of the new Saeul plant. This decision was made under the leadership of President Yoon Suk-yeol, who scrapped the previous administration's policy to phase out nuclear energy over 45 years.

South Korea's nuclear energy sector is a powerhouse, with 26 operable reactors generating about a third of the country's electricity. The country has embraced nuclear energy as a strategic priority, and with the addition of Saeul 3, it continues to lead the way in this field.

With four operational APR1400 units and two more under construction, South Korea is not alone in its pursuit of this technology. The UAE's Barakah nuclear power plant also boasts four APR1400 units, all now in commercial operation.
