Barry Harley OAM, a man with an unexpected connection to country music, is bidding farewell to his role as the coordinator of the Tamworth Country Music Festival. But this isn't just any festival; it's the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere, and Barry's story is an intriguing one.
A Reluctant Start
In 1973, Barry, a marketing expert, was approached to help organize this grand event. Despite not being a country music enthusiast initially, he agreed, and little did he know, it would change his life forever. His marketing skills, honed at Myer, were transferred to the festival, and he soon discovered a passion for the country music scene and the people behind it.
"I found myself drawn to the country music community, not just because of the music, but because of the incredible people creating it. They fostered great friendships, and I felt right at home."
A Festival's Growth and Impact
The first festival in 1973 was modest, with Peel Street nearly empty. Barry humorously recalls, "You could've fired a cannon up the street and not hit a soul."
However, a partnership with the Country Capital Music Association's talent search that year sparked something special. The competition evolved into the prestigious Golden Guitar Awards, and the audience for the awards ceremony grew exponentially, from a few hundred to a thousand in a short time.
Since then, the festival has flourished, attracting over 300,000 attendees annually to witness 700 performers across 80 venues. It's a testament to the power of country music and the vision of people like Barry.
"The evolution of country music has been the festival's lifeblood. It hasn't needed drastic changes to attract new fans because the music itself has evolved, broadening its appeal."

For Barry, the festival was more than just an event; it was a family. He formed deep bonds with countless artists, making it impossible for him to choose a favorite. From established stars like Troy Cassar-Daley to rising talents like Max Jackson and Wade Forster, the diversity and authenticity of the artists mirrored the festival's spirit.
Max Jackson, a Coonamble-born musician, expressed his surreal feelings about Barry's departure. As the festival ambassador in 2023, she acknowledged that much of her success was thanks to Barry's support.
"Barry has always considered everyone, from street performers to newcomers, all the way to the Golden Guitars. His dedication ensures that everyone feels valued and has an opportunity to shine."
Ashleigh Dallas, a third-generation Tamworth musician, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting Barry's support for her entire family.
"I've seen his kids grow up, and our relationship will endure, regardless of his changing role. I hope he gets to enjoy some well-deserved family time and continue doing the things he loves. And of course, he'll always be on the guest list for any show!"
A New Chapter
While Barry's role as the festival coordinator comes to an end, he plans to continue his involvement in an advisory capacity. Joel Ulbricht will take the reins next year, but for now, he's learning from the master. Barry emphasizes that his career wasn't about leaving a legacy but about the collective effort of countless individuals over 54 years, which has shaped the festival into what it is today.
