As we kick off 2026, residents in certain regions of Western Australia are bracing for an intense heatwave, with temperatures expected to soar beyond a sweltering 40 degrees Celsius. This alarming weather pattern has prompted the Bureau of Meteorology to issue a heatwave warning encompassing the Pilbara, Gascoyne, Goldfields, Eucla, North and South Interior, as well as the Central Wheatbelt.
During this weekend, residents can expect to experience extreme heat, with temperatures gradually climbing into the mid-forties by the beginning of next week. Meteorologist Angus Hines has indicated that most of Western Australia will bask in sunny conditions, but severe heat will blanket significant areas of the State. "The west coast will see temperatures reaching the mid-thirties, while areas in the Wheatbelt, Great Southern, and parts of the interior can expect scorching highs around 40 degrees Celsius," he explained.
In addition to the blistering temperatures, Kalgoorlie is set to endure a maximum temperature of 41 degrees on Saturday, with forecasts suggesting it could hit 43 degrees on Sunday and an even hotter 44 degrees by Monday. Meanwhile, in the Pilbara region, Karratha is projected to experience temperatures of 39 degrees throughout the weekend, with Newman facing highs of 41 and 43 degrees on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Port Hedland isn't escaping the heat either, as it will also hover around 39 degrees over the same days.
The towns of Northam and York will not be spared either, seeing maximum temperatures of 40 and 41 degrees, respectively, during the weekend. On a slightly brighter note, Perth's metropolitan area will enjoy relatively milder conditions, with temperatures expected to remain in the low thirties.
